Sitting high atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in Floyd County
VA, the L-shaped main barn at Owl Hollow Farm contains fourteen 14' by 14'
stalls, two 17' by 14' foaling boxes, and one 14' by 14' isolation stall; all
fully matted on a packed bluestone over clay base. Each stall is equipped
with a permanent overhead fan, individual light, two electrical outlets, two
water buckets, a corner feed bucket, a sliding grated door leading into the barn
aisle, and a dutch door with a protection grate leading outside.
Communication grates between each stall may be sealed for
privacy. Half-grated stall fronts help provide maximum air circulation.
A permanently installed fly system includes an on/off spray nozzle in each
stall. Each stall is bedded with locally milled saw dust, cleaned twice
daily, and completely stripped once a week or more often if needed. The
foaling boxes also include observation cameras and infrared heaters.
Support facilities in the main barn include a kitchen/lounge,
bathroom, tack room, two bay wash stall with hot/cold water and central vacuum,
laundry room, two bay vet/shoeing room, feed room, and several storage rooms.
The large central aisle contains five large sliding double doors leading to the
outside and is paved in non-skid red brick. A storage loft runs the full
length of the large leg of the barn and a two-bedroom apartment occupies the
short leg.
Located between the barn and the main house is a courtyard
containing a brick dust walking track and a small grazing area. A covered
overhang paved in non-skid red brick run the full length of both long sides of
the barn. A roof top ridge vent, open cupolas, and windowed dormers help
insure maximum circulation within the barn. Several hard wired smoke
detectors/heat sensors are located throughout the entire barn and are connected
to an independently monitored security system.
Located behind the main barn is the school house which
includes a 55' diameter indoor round pen, a large sawdust storage bay, two shop
bays, an overhead hay storage loft, and an observation deck overlooking the
round pen. A permanently installed fan, open cupolas, and several windows
maintain an even work temperature and maximum air flow. The footing in the
round pen is a mixture of sand and shredded rubber over a packed clay base.
Surrounding the entire facility are several paddocks of
various sizes. Most include wooden, three-quarter closed run-in sheds and
all contain large rubber water tanks that are checked daily. Individual
turn-out is the norm, although group turn-out may be arranged if preferred.
Located a short distance from the main barn is a standard
sized (20 meter by 60 meter) blue stone dressage arena. Other training
amenities include a fully equipped jump field, a five-eighths of a mile
galloping track, a conditioning hill, and several hacking trails. After
working hard, a quick dip in the man-made pond is the perfect way to cool off at
the end of the day.
